Pat Lawlor

Pat Lawlor is one of the most celebrated pinball designers of all time, known for bringing inventive game mechanics and immersive themes to life. He got his start at Williams in the late 1980s, making an immediate splash with games like Banzai Run (featuring a vertical playfield) and Earthshaker! (introducing the first shaker motor). Over the next few years, Lawlor created a string of popular titles such as FunHouse, Whirlwind, and eventually The Addams Family, which became the highest-selling pinball machine in history, thanks to its clever use of magnets, “Thing Flips” feature, and seamless integration of the spooky license.

After Williams shut down in 1999, Lawlor formed Pat Lawlor Design and partnered with Stern Pinball to continue producing games, including Monopoly, RollerCoaster Tycoon, and Family Guy. In the 2010s, he joined Jersey Jack Pinball (JJP), where he further pushed the boundaries of pinball technology with Dialed In!, widely praised for its smartphone connectivity and creative disaster theme. Throughout his career, Lawlor’s emphasis on interactive toys, thematic immersion, and novel playfield layouts shaped modern pinball design and ensured his continued influence on the industry.

Lawlor’s design philosophy favors a “stop-and-go” style of play, encouraging careful aim and strategic shot selection. He often adds a third flipper to create specialized angles, while also incorporating imaginative features—like the talking head Rudy in FunHouse or the gumball machine in Twilight Zone—that serve both as gameplay elements and memorable icons. Widely regarded as a pioneer in bridging theme with mechanics, Pat Lawlor remains a giant in the pinball world, credited with sustaining innovation through multiple decades and keeping the silver-ball spirit alive.
